Janis Marian Mattinson

Janis “Jan” Marian Mattinson, 84, was born in Humboldt, Kansas, March 31, 1932, and died on September 8, 2016 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She grew up in Chanute, Kansas, and attended Chanute High School, Chanute Junior College, and Kansas State University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics, and was a member of Pi Beta Phi. She went to work for Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas, where she met her husband, Howard Fulton Mattinson. They married in 1957 and moved to Canada, and then lived in several cities along the east coast. She relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967, and took a position with the University of Tulsa, where she edited petroleum abstracts and taught laboratory classes.

Always fully engaged in her community, Jan was active in the American Association of University Women, Tulsa Panhellenic, Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, American Society of Petroleum Geologists, and American Earth Science Editors. She was a member of All Souls Unitarian Church, and a founding member of Hope Unitarian Church, and was active in church activities at the local, state and national level.

As a polio survivor, she was an inspiration to all who knew her. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents, Delbert and Joette Finney. She is survived by her family: sister, Martha Bross and Phares, of Independence, Kansas, niece Kate Scott and Henry of Owasso, Oklahoma, daughters Pam Bosterud of St. Louis, Missouri, Jill Margaret Mattinson of Washington, DC, Susan Alvarez of Dallas, Texas, and grandchildren Mikael Alvarez, and Cydney Alvarez.

A memorial service celebrating Jan’s life will be held at Hope Unitarian Church on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 11:00 am.
