Nell Bowman Farris was born August 24, 1924 in Lexington, Kentucky to Charles
F. and Ida Baker Bowman. She died on January 27th, 2016 at the age of 91. Nell was a graduate of Henry Clay High School
in Lexington and worked in a factory in Detroit during World War II and
later for the VA in Washington DC, repatriating veterans coming home from
overseas. She married Jack James Farris on September 26, 1949 in Lexington.
Jack was employed by Standard Oil of Indiana, later to be Amoco, which
took them to Houston, Texas and then to Tulsa, Oklahoma. They had two
children, Jack James Jr. and Sharon Leigh. Nell was a long time member
of Harvard Avenue Christian Church, one of the first ladies racquetball
players at the Thornton Y, loved playing bridge, poker and gin rummy,
traveling, enjoying her grandsons, eating candy and rooting for her beloved
Kentucky Wildcats.
Nell was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and two sisters and husband Jack.
She is survived by her children, Jay Farris and wife Sherri of Scottsdale,
Arizona and Sharon and husband Bill Jones of Collinsville and their two
grandsons, Garrett Jones of Rolla, Missouri and Nicholas Jones of Collinsville
as well as many nephews and nieces.
Graveside services will be at the Lexington Cemetery, Lexington KY on February 5, 2016.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Memorial Fund
at Harvard Avenue Christian Church or the charity of one’s choice.
