Lloyd Lyle Smith, Jr.

Lloyd Lyle Smith, Jr., was born on March 8, 1928, in Bristow, Oklahoma, to Lloyd Smith, Sr., and Beulah Ruth Powell Smith. Lyle's maternal grandmother homesteaded a section of land in Colorado, while his paternal grandfather made the run of '89 and homesteaded in central Oklahoma, living in a dugout for several years.

Lyle and his younger sister Jayne grew up in Bristow until their father was called back into the army during World War II, and stationed first at Fort Benning, Georgia, then nearby Camp Blanding, Florida, then to a camp near Augusta, Georgia. Lyle began college at the University of Georgia, transferred to Joplin Junior College and then the University of Missouri when his family moved to Joplin, and completed his degree at the University of Oklahoma. He enjoyed playing saxophone in dance bands while he was there. After graduating with a degree in business administration in 1949, he was commissioned as a 2 nd lieutenant, Engineers, in the Army Reserve, and called to active duty in October, 1950. A year later he was in Korea, building & maintaining air fields for the Air Force.

When Lyle returned, he lived with his folks in Bartlesville and worked for Phillips Petroleum, selling in the plastics division. He met and married Patricia Clements of Cushing in 1954. Phillips transferred him several times.

Their only child, Sharon, was born in Evansville, Indiana. They then lived in New York; Erie, Pennsylvania; New York again; New Jersey; and Jackson, Mississippi. Lyle changed companies to Allied Chemical, when they moved to Cincinnati. They made the decision to come home to Oklahoma after about 13 years away. Lyle became an insurance salesman when they moved to Oklahoma City. He also did estate planning, worked in oil & gas, and eventually tried his hand at selling cars.

Lyle & Pat moved to Tulsa in 1982, and their marriage ended not long after.

A few years later, Lyle met Gerry Mott at Southern Hills United Methodist, and they married in 1988, when he was 60.

Along with Gerry, Lyle was active at Southern Hills United Methodist church for many years, enjoying the fellowship of the people there, being a liturgist, sometimes playing his guitar, and being active in Sunday School with his wife Gerry. They were active in the church as long as their health allowed it. He also enjoyed dogs, owning one or more of them most of his adult life. Lyle, an avid reader, also enjoyed keeping up with what was going on in the business world, and keeping up with OU football.

Lyle lost his only sibling, Jayne, in December 2011, and his wife, Gerry, on January 11 of this year. His concern for Gerry's welfare kept him going when his doctor was concerned about his serious health issues.

Lyle is survived by his daughter, Sharon, and her husband Tom, of Norman, grandchildren Daniel (of Maine), Michael, Sarah, Andrew, Joseph, and Philip (all of Norman); Daniel's wife Rebecca, and their children Isaiah & Simon (of Maine); and Gerry's sons John, Roger, and Alan, and their families.

Condolences

Linda Chamberlain
I will always remember Lyle as a man who conducted himself with with dignity, thoughtfulness for others, and as a perfect gentleman. It was an honor to have helped him while he was at Woodland Terrace. He was blessed to have such a loving family and support from his church. The genuinely kind man I came to know will not be forgotten. Bless you all.
