William Fredereck Hegdale

William Fredereck Hegdale, known as Bill, 72, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died on Friday, June 22, 2012. Bill was born on March 14, 1940, in Long Beach, California, to Olaf Frederick Hegdale and Mary Margaret Hegdale. Six years later he had a little sister, Mary Jane, whom he liked to take for rides around the block in his wagon, sometimes under protest. The family often went camping together at a place called Hat Creek, in California. In high school, he was a star football player, and loved cars, especially corvettes, so much so that he had a racing license. He enlisted in the Navy during his junior year, and completed basic training the summer before his senior year, during which he was in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He graduated high school in June 1958, and immediately transferred to active duty.

He married Pam Astley in November 1967, and they raised four children, Charles, Stephen, David, and Catherine.

Bill began in the Navy as a Bosun's Mate, and then became a Gunner's Mate Technician (GMT), a career for which he was exceptionally suited. Bill achieved the rate of E-7 Chief Petty Officer by the time he had served barely 10 years in the Navy. He went on to achieve the rank of E-8 Senior Chief Petty Officer – the second highest enlisted rate. He was later a special weapons inspector, and then a special weapons instructor. He had a reputation throughout the fleet for being excellent at his job. In April 1981, he was transferred to another special weapons inspection team in McAlester, Oklahoma, which was his final duty station. He retired in January 1985, after serving 27 years in the US Navy.

Pam and Bill divorced in 1988. Bill enrolled in Tulsa Community College and then OSU to continue his education. He later married Mary Kathleen Rivera in 1989, and increased his family by adding her three grown children to his life, as well as many grandchildren. He was active in their community, and many there remember him for being a good friend and neighbor. They were married until she passed in 1994.

Through friends of Mary Kathleen's family, Bill later met and married Katherine Wagner in 2003, increasing his family again with another four grown children, as well as three more grandchildren. He loved to build and fly model airplanes, and was a member of many local organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Hegdale; his sister, Mary Hegdale of California; his son Charles and his wife Danielle; his son Stephen and his wife Angelique; his son David and his wife April; his daughter Catherine of California; and many loving grandchildren and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents of California, and his grandson Nicholas of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

A private family memorial service will be held Friday, June 29.

Just found this information by a web search. I knew Bill very well while stationed on the USS San Joaquin County LST-1122 in Iwakuni Japan. I almost bought a car from him in Long Beach California a little while later. I would appreciate an answer to this email with the dates he was on the LST if possible. We also had a few drinks and motorcycle rides in Iwakuni. I am sorry for his passing.
